The symbol placed at the end of a staff, or a page, to indicate the first note of the next staff. It appears in musical sources from the 11th century onwards. It takes various forms, the commonest being akin to a sign for a mordent on the line or in the space of the note it stands for, with a tail extending upwards and forwards.
