Disabled American Veterans

US Military Dictionary: Disabled American Veterans

DAV

A nonprofit organization of more than 1 million disabled U.S. veterans. As a result of inadequate services for disabled veterans, World War I veterans formed local groups that merged into the Disabled American Veterans organization in 1920. This group was chartered by Congress in 1932. It pushed for legislation to create a centralized government agency, the Veterans Bureau, which is now the Department of Veterans Affairs. The veterans' group provides assistance to members in obtaining benefits and lobbies on behalf of members at the federal, state, and local level.
