Biography

Beneath the veneer of catchy tunes, pop-ish folk rhythms, and sophisticated harmonies of blood sisters Sonia Rutstein and Cindy Frank beats a heart of hardcore social feminist consciousness. Born and raised in Baltimore, the sisters formed disappear fear in 1987. As the name implies, they call for unity, an end to injustice, and seek to break down the prejudicial barriers that keep people apart. Rutstein composes most of the songs and her compositions have been compared to those of Phil Ochs, Joni Mitchell, and Bob Dylan -- their harmonies and approach are reminiscent of the Indigo Girls. After three critically acclaimed self-released albums and an EP, they signed to Philo Records. In 1995 their self-titled album for Philo Records received a 1995 Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation award for Outstanding Album. In June 1996, they released Seed in the Sahara. Later that year, the duo disbanded and Sonia went on to enjoy a successful solo career. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Music Guide

Disappear Fear, an American folk/power pop band, formed in Baltimore in 1987. The original band consisted of sisters Sonia Rutstein and Cindy Frank. Their lyrics often addressed LGBT rights and other progressive political causes. They released four albums, then in 1996, Cindy ceased playing regularly with the band in order to become a mother but occasionally still performs with them. Sonia Rutstein started a solo career (as "SONiA"). In 2005, Sonia Rutstein re-formed the band, with Laura Cerulli on percussion and vocals, and Angela Edge on bass guitar and trumpet. Sonia Rutstein provided lead vocals, guitar, harmonica and piano. The band released its first album in its new incarnation in October 2005. Angela has since left the band.
