Geography Dictionary:

dissolved oxygen

Oxygen from the atmosphere and from photosynthesis is dissolved in the upper levels of all bodies of water and is vital for the maintenance of most aquatic life. The amount of oxygen present decreases with depth, rising temperatures, and with the oxidation of organic matter and pollutants. The amount of oxygen used by organisms depends on their biological oxygen demand. See also eutrophication.
