Almost certainly among the oddest imports ever to grace rock record bins in the U.S. during the mid-'70s, Division on a Ground reflected the roots of Richard Harvey's musicianship more fully than any of his work with Gryphon. It's essentially a classical album (done for what was primarily a folk label), subtitled "An Introduction to the Recorder and Its Music." Comprised of the music of Handel, Vivaldi, Loeillet, et. al, the music is all played straight and formally, so those purchasing this as an LP in the '70s and hoping for some ELP-like (or even Gryphon-like) excursions were probably disappointed -- on the other hand, serious fans of the latter group and their sound were probably delighted. The album still holds up as a good introduction to its subject and, thanks to its presence in the Transatlantic catalog and its association with Gryphon, is still sold as part of the '70s British prog rock legacy in the 21st century. The 2006-vintage Japanese mini-LP-format reissue offers superb sound. ~ Bruce Eder, All Music Guide
