Biography

Not the average model-turned-actor, D.J. Qualls made his name with a decidedly unglamorous debut in the popular teen gross-out comedy Road Trip (2000). Raised in Tennessee as one of five children, Qualls was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease at age 14. After drastic surgery and two years of chemotherapy, the cancer went into remission. Determined to forge on with his life, the rail-thin Qualls began acting in local Nashville theater productions and attended Belmont University. After he was spotted by flamboyant photographer David LaChappelle, Qualls also began modeling, appearing most notably in ads for Prada. He first got to act in front of the camera in the TV movie Mama Flora's Family (1998), but he did not make the jump to features until he was cast a couple of years later in Road Trip. Originally auditioning for a bit part, Qualls instead landed a starring role as one of the college youths who makes the eponymous journey to retrieve a sexually incriminating videotape. As humorously nerdy virgin Kyle, Qualls received better reviews than the movie, establishing himself as a rising young actor. He subsequently appeared in the darkly comic teen thriller about a murderer targeting virgins, Cherry Falls (2000). 2002 found Qualls taking the lead role of an uncool high-school student who gets an ultrahip image makeover in the teen comedy The New Guy. ~ Lucia Bozzola, All Movie Guide

Early life

Qualls was born to Debbie and Donnie Qualls in Nashville, Tennessee, one of five children. He was raised in Manchester, Tennessee and attended school nearby. He was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma at age 14, and after two years of treatment, his cancer was said to be in remission. After graduating in 1992 from Coffee County Central High School, in Manchester, Tennessee, Qualls attended the University of London in England where he studied English and literature. He returned to Tennessee in 1993 and enrolled in Belmont University in Nashville, where he also began acting in a local theatre company.

Career

He was an extra in the HBO movie Against the Wall in 1994. He landed the small role of Jason in the television miniseries Mama Flora's Family (1998) while participating for free in Community Theater. After auditioning for a one-liner in Road Trip (2000) he was asked to come from the Atlanta office to meet producer Ivan Reitman in California. Qualls debuted in Road Trip as shy virgin Kyle Edwards. [1]

After Road Trip, Qualls increasingly worked as a model, working for Prada and with photographers David LaChapelle and Steve Klein. [2] In Cherry Falls (2000), he played Wally, another virgin. In 2001 he played Neil Lawrence in Chasing Holden.[3]

In 2002, he appeared as Archie in the film Comic Book Villains, Andrew in Big Trouble, Junior in Lone Star State of Mind, Dizzy Gillespie Harrison in The New Guy, and Rat in the sci-fi film The Core.[4] Qualls starred in the comedy Delta Farce with Bill Engvall and Larry the Cable Guy, which was released on May 11, 2007.[5]

His television work includes appearances on Monk, Scrubs, Criminal Minds, Lost, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, CSI, Numb3rs, My Name Is Earl, Breaking Bad, and The Big Bang Theory. [6]

Qualls appeared in a cameo in Britney Spears' music video, "Boys", and he was also in the "I’m Just a Kid" music video by Simple Plan.
