In 2006, it seemed the South and the Bay Area had a lock on homegrown urban club hits until Webstar and Young B came on the scene with their instant smash "Chicken Noodle Soup." Female rapper Young B (aka Bianca Dupree) was only 16-years-old when she turned what was her favorite meal to eat when feeling sick -- chicken soup and ginger ale -- into the song's first hook, "Chicken noodle soup with a soda on the side." Producer and promoter Webstar -- who was only 19-years-old -- used to clear the floor at his Harlem parties by waving his arms and telling people to "clear it out." This supplied the song's other big hook -- "Let it rain/Clear it out" -- which clubgoers soon began illustrating with arm gestures that would turn into the track's unofficial dance. It was June of 2006 when "Chicken Noodle Soup" began blowing up in the Harlem clubs and soon a series of homemade videos with uptown N.Y.C. kids doing the dance began appearing on various video-sharing sites. It wasn't long before mid-Americans and beyond were joining in on the craze, uploading their own vids to the party track and making Webstar's name prophetic. Right about the time West Coast businessmen in their three-piece suits began posting their versions, Webstar and Young B had their independently released 12" snatched up by the major label Universal. In August, the label put "Chicken Noodle Soup" in the hands of DJs across America. ~ David Jeffries, Rovi
