Dmitri Vladimirovich Kalinin (Russian: Дмитрий Владимирович Калинин) (born July 22, 1980 in Chelyabinsk, USSR) is an ice hockey defenceman currently playing in the NHL for the Buffalo Sabres. He wears number 45 for the Buffalo Sabres.
Kalinin was born in Chelyabinsk, USSR (now Russia) as the youngest of two children. Both his parents and his brother are factory workers. [citation needed] He was drafted by the Sabres 18th overall in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. Much of his English skills were taught to him by his former teammate Alexei Zhitnik. [citation needed]
Had an injury plagued 2005-06 season, but did not miss a game in the 2006-07 season. (One of only four Sabres to do so.) He scored the NHL's first goal in the 2006-07 season - at 9:09 of the first period in the season opener at Carolina.
Kalinin plays both on the penalty kill and power play. He is the defensive partner of Teppo Numminen, but since Teppo is injured Nathan Paestch is replacing him.
A lot was said about the low quality of play by Kalinin during the 2007 Sabres-Sens series. Not until after players reported to camp for the 07-08 season was it revealed that he was playing with a sports hernia and didn't have surgery until the off season.
