Plot

Until it was partially repealed, the 1952 McCarren Walter Act prevented a quarter of a million foreign citizens from entering the United States on political grounds. In this program, writers, political figures, and others reflect on how this legislation affected the free exchange of ideas in America. Interviewees include Arthur Miller, John Irving, Ronald Reagan, William F. Buckley Jr., and Nobel Laureates Dario Fo and Gabriel García Márquez.
