Movies:

Dollars and the Woman

  • Release Year: 1916

Plot

Two men, Dan Hilyer (Tom Moore) and Arthur Crewe (Crauford Kent), grow up as romantic rivals for the same girl. As adults, Hilyer, an inventor, wins the girl, Madge (Ethel Clayton), while Crewe, who is wealthy, remains a friend of the family. The Hilyers run through Dan's patent money quickly, and he travels to San Francisco for the sale of another patent. While he is gone, Madge loses the rest of her money to a pickpocket, and Crewe loans her enough money to get by. She has a baby, and her husband finally comes through with a yearly royalty that will keep them comfortable financially. Madge pays Crewe back, with interest. Hilyer finds the canceled check and assumes that Madge and Crewe were having an affair. The three of them have a heated confrontation, but Crewe's eloquent defense of Madge convinces Hilyer to reconcile with them both. This picture was based on the novel, Dollars and Cents, by Albert Payson Terhune. ~ Janiss Garza, All Movie Guide
