Adventure Guide: Campo Las Palmas
Santo Domingo: Day Trips: East of Santo Domingo:

Primarily a training facility for up-and-coming Los Angeles Dodgers rookies, Campo Las Palmas also serves as a general tryout camp for Latin American players aspiring to join the Major Leagues. (And so far, dozens have done just that – including Boston’s longtime star Pedro Martinez.) Management welcomes visiting sports fans for tours of the facilities and lunch with the players when training sessions are in progress (generally year-round except for the Christmas and Easter holiday seasons). Since the camp is in the town of Guerra about 15 miles northeast of the city, you will need a private vehicle to get here – though there’s been talk of providing a shuttle service from the capital. Call at least 24 hours in advance for reservations. (Guerra, East Santo Domingo, ☎ 809-591-8413.)

Although the old sugar plantations are now in ruins, you will surely see fields of sugarcane as you travel the country.
