Puerto Plata’s Malecón and Av. Hermanas Mirabal (south of Long Beach, on the Malecón’s eastern end) are loaded with bars and nightspots, but they are often thick with prostitutes.
Puerto Plata Pub Crawl (☎ 586-7923 after noon, www.popreport.com/PubCrawl/). Organized by Café Cito, this tour of the most popular area nightspots stretches all the way east to Cabarete. It starts at sunset for cocktails at the Colonial-era Fort San Felipe along Puerto Plata’s Malecón, stops at a Dominican car wash (a traditional beer-drinking gathering place in the DR), and visits Café Cito for beer and food. It then moves on to Sosúa, where the group prowls the merengue bars, British pubs, and sidewalk cafés along Pedro Clisante in El Batey. It concludes in Cabarete, where the pubs are literally on the beach. Transportation is by air-conditioned bus – complete with bar – which returns to Puerto Plata-area hotels at 12:30 am (though some skip the ride back to continue partying in Cabarete). The price is US $49 per person, but drinks at private establishments are extra. The Pub Crawl sets off every Wednesday and Saturday night in high season. Don’t make plans for early Thursday/Sunday.
For disco action in Playa Dorada, check out Mangú at the Occidental Allegro Jack Tar Puerto Plata and Topps and Granty at the Playa Naco. The action tends to get going after midnight. Roadway Western Bar and Grill, Hemingway’s Bar & Grill, and Cheers Bar can get noisy and even rowdy with late-night revelers.
