Samaná Peninsula, Bay & Surroundings: Las Galeras: Places to Eat

<< Places to Stay || Nightlife & Entertainment >>

All the following restaurants are on the Carretera Las Galeras, the main road leading in from Samaná that deadends at Las Galeras beach. The tourist season slows down tremendously after the July/August European crush, so a few of these places may be closed if you visit during the fall. The supermarket in the Centro Comercial building is always well-stocked, however, and local eateries such as the kiosk and comedors stay open year-round.

Casa Por Que Non (☎ 809-538-0011) $$. Open only from November to April when the Canadian proprietors of this B&B (attached to their private home) winter on the island, Casa Por Que Non serves an excellent breakfast, open to the public.

Chez Denise (☎ 809-538-0219) $$. This street-side café with patio seating does great crêpes as well as fresh fish prepared in a variety of ways. A favorite hangout for local expats, it’s open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

El Pizzeria (no phone) $$. Located on the ground floor of the Centro Comercial building, El Pizzeria serves up salads and meat entrées along with good pizza.

Restaurant Ruby (no phone) $$. Housed in a graceful palapa hut and run almost single-handedly by an effervescent proprietor (and a few extended family members who pick up the slack as the dinner crowd expands), Ruby is named for the talented owner-chef, who turns out made-to-order specialties like aromatic mussels in garlic and wine. The casual yet elegant atmosphere is fashioned from modest furnishings carved from beached driftwood, soft lighting, and just the right tone of music. Piña coladas presented in hollowed-out pineapple husks are a nice touch.

Galeras Beach Kiosk (no phone) $. At this collection of shacks on the beach in the center of town, you can enjoy some of the best fried fish and tostones (fried plantains) you may have in your life – all for about RD $100. Don’t overlook this local watering hole for a casual meal while you’re here.

Patiserrie (no phone) $. This small bakery tucked away in a cozy corner just off Carretera Las Galeras is a good spot for breakfast, coffee and pastries.
