Rancho Baiguate (Carretera Constanza, ☎ 809-574-4940, fax 809-574-6890, www.ranchobaiguate.com) $$$. This self-contained camp lies on several wooded acres containing hiking trails, rivers, and an unheated swimming pool. The 27 large rooms all have two beds and private bathrooms with very hot water. Rates include three daily cafeteria-style meals except on Tuesday nights, when guests are shuttled over to a sister restaurant in town. The rancho is a good 30-minute walk from town on an unlit dirt road so, unless the management is running a nighttime shuttle service, you’ll need your own vehicle or will have to hire a motoconcho driver to take you into Jarabacoa and back at night.

Prices include breakfast on the weekends only, when the lodge tends to fill up with Dominicans escaping the city.

Piñar Dorado (Carretera Constanza, ☎ 809-574-2820, fax 809-687-7012, pinardorado@ranchobiguate.com) $$. Often used to house package travelers, this hotel has an old Catskills resort feel to it, from the dining room that serves up group à la carte meals to the active lounge/bar that occasionally erupts with spontaneous entertainment resembling “Talent Night” at Sunny Oaks. Owned by the Rancho Baiguate group, the rooms are a little more upmarket than the Rancho itself, with TV, air-conditioning, and private balconies. It’s also a bit closer to town than the Rancho.
