In the British Empire and British Commonwealth, it referred to:

- The Dominion of Newfoundland, the former name of Newfoundland and Labrador prior to it becoming a Canadian province in 1949.
- The Dominion of New Zealand, a disused name for the Realm of New Zealand.
- The Dominion of Canada is similarly the disused name of Canada.
- Other former dominions include Commonwealth of Australia, Irish Free State, Union of India, Pakistan, and Union of South Africa but while they were referred to as dominions the countries did not use the term in their formal names.
