Donald A. "Don" Diamond (born June 4, 1921 in Brooklyn, New York) is an American radio, film, and television actor.
Although Diamond often played a Mexican or Native American, his family actually comes from Eastern Europe. Diamond's father, a United States Army World War I veteran, emigrated to America from Russia with his parents as a child.
Diamond studied drama at the University of Michigan, graduating with a Bachelor's degree in 1942. He then enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps, where he earned a commission. He learned to speak Spanish while he was stationed in New Mexico during World War II. Discharged in 1946 as a first lieutenant, Diamond began performing on radio and became known for his dialect portrayals of Mexicans. This led to his playing the role of "El Toro" role in The Adventures of Kit Carson syndicated television series, which ran from 1951 to 1955. Diamond also played Corporal Reyes on the Walt Disney television series Zorro (1957–1959). He has appeared on more than 100 television shows and in many feature films, but is probably best known today for portraying the Hekawi Indian Crazy Cat in the television comedy F Troop. He was also seen on Our House, Newhart, L.A. Law, MacGyver, Dallas, Dynasty, WKRP in Cincinnati, Vega$, Lou Grant, The Rockford Files, Get Smart, That Girl, and The Wild Wild West. Diamond did voice-over work in cartoons and commercials.
Family life
Diamond's wife, Louisa, is a former Spanish language teacher. He and his wife have a daughter, Roxanne (born 1966). Now in his 80s, Diamond is retired from performing.
