If you were in a hardcore or punk band in the New York City area during the '90s, chances are you or a band you knew recorded a demo with producer Don Fury. And that's not to say Fury didn't work with national acts, as he's produced releases for such renowned names as Agnostic Front, G.G. Allin, CIV, Helmet, and (especially) Quicksand. During the '80s, Fury opened a recording studio in downtown Manhattan, which was first used by such art punks as the Voidoids, James Chance, and the Bush Tetras, before hardcore bands began to infiltrate the local scene. Fury quickly became a noted figure with hardcore bands, as he played a major role in starting the now famous CBGB's hardcore matinee, due to his networking and friendship with longtime CBGB's owner Hilly Kristal. But it was Fury's production of Agnostic Front's classic 1986 release, Cause for Alarm/Victim in Pain, that made him a much sought-after local producer.
Revelation Records soon began using Fury's studio often for their roster of artist, which resulted in releases by such groups as Gorilla Biscuits, Judge, Burn, Youth of Today, Into Another, Quicksand, Orange 9mm, and CIV. When the label relocated to the West Coast, another label, Wreck-Age, stepped in and began regularly booking time in Fury's studio, resulting in further releases by Yuppicide, Mind Over Matter, S.F.A., Stillsuit, and Neglect, while other noted hardcore labels booked time as well -- including Equal Vision (Shelter, Shift) and Victory (Snapcase, Warzone). Fury also had the "honor" of working on what would be shock rocker G.G. Allin's final studio recording, 1993's Brutality & Bloodshed for All, in addition to producing both of Quicksand's incredibly influential efforts, 1993's Slip and 1995's Manic Compression.
For a brief period during the late '90s, Fury was also given his own distribution deal with TVT Records to create his own record label, Building Records (the label continued on for some time, even after Fury was no longer associated with it). Early 2001 saw the opening of an all new Fury-headed studio, Cyclone Sound, located in Coney Island (Brooklyn, NY). Fury continues to produce artists in the 21st century, including hair metal revivalists Atello, in addition to more trademark Fury fare such as Discordance Axis and Hiretsukan. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide
