"Don't Dream It's Over" is a pop/rock song written by New Zealander Neil Finn and performed by Crowded House for their debut album Crowded House.[1] Various artists have released covers of the song; in 2001, Sixpence None the Richer recorded and released a single of the song. The song is a staple of 1980s pop compilations.

Teen dramas, Degrassi: The Next Generation and One Tree Hill, both named an episode after this song.

"Don't Dream It's Over" was used in Summerland to close the last episode of the show as it's the favourite song of Johnny and Ava.

The song was featured in the 1994 Stephen King mini series adaptation of The Stand. It was also featured in the second episode "But for the Grace of God" in the fourth season of Medium.

It was also featured in an episode of Miami Vice

The track was also featured during commercials, promoting the final episodes of Beverly Hills 90210 & Summerland.

In the Drake and Josh episode, "Skydiving", Josh (Josh Peck) is heard muttering the chorus of "Don't Dream It's Over"

Even though a New Zealand single, in May 2001, Australasian Performing Rights Association (APRA) celebrated its 75th anniversary by naming the Best Australian Songs of all time, as decided by a 100 person industry panel. "Don't Dream It's Over" was ranked seventh.[2]

"Don't Dream It's Over" was the very last song performed at Crowded House's "Farewell to the world" concert in 1996.

"Don't Dream It's Over" was also used for commercials for New Zealand's tourism board in 2000.

In the episode "Sherry Darlin'" of Cold Case, "Don't Dream It's Over can be heard during on of the flashbacks.

In the 2009 comedy Adventureland, "Don't Dream It's Over" was played while fireworks were exploding in the background.

The song has been covered by numerous artists, including Classified[disambiguation needed] in 2003, Less Stress in 1990, Paul Young in 1991 (gaining a number 20 UK hit), Sixpence None the Richer in 2002 (as a single), and Howie Day in 2005; Italian singer Antonello Venditti provided his own translated version of the song, "Alta Marea", which became a massive hit in Italian charts. Also, Sarah Blasko covered the song for the tribute album She Will Have Her Way in (2005) and performed it in front of a worldwide audience during the closing ceremony of the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. In 2006, A version of the song by singer-songwriter Teddy Thompson was included on an '80s tribute CD released free with Q Magazine, the song was covered also by Paul Carrack for his album Old, New, Borrowed And Blue.

Sixpence None the Richer version

"Don't Dream It's Over" was the second radio single released in promotion of the album, Divine Discontent, by Sixpence None the Richer. The commercial single release features the B-side, "Don't Pass Me By", which was recorded during the sessions for Divine Discontent.
