double-blind situation

Sports Science and Medicine: double-blind situation

A situation in which contradictory demands or meanings are communicated in the same message or environment. A coach, for example, may encourage an athlete to be competitive and follow the ‘law of the jungle’, while family and teachers urge the athlete to cooperate with others or to turn the other cheek. The athlete is then in a double-blind situation.
