Biography

Originally under the moniker MK Ultra, Doubledrive's heavier rock influence first hit their hometown of Atlanta, GA, in 1996 with their lineup consisting of Troy McLawhorn (guitar), Joshua Sattler (bass), Mike Froedge (drums), and Donnie Hamby (vocal). For the three years that followed, Doubledrive's van would take them to gigs all throughout the Southeastern United States. This method of constant touring not only resulted wide in recognition for their recurring club appearances, but also an award for Atlanta's "favorite metal/extreme" category in 1998. With all this hype, a label bidding war ensured with RCA coming out as the victors. Hence, Doubledrive's full-length debut 1000 Yard Sale was released in 1999. ~ Mike DaRonco, All Music Guide

Biography

Originally called MK Ultra, doubleDrive arrived on the music scene in their hometown of Atlanta in late 1996. After winning the award for Atlanta's favorite "metal/extreme band" in 1998, doubleDrive signed a record deal with MCA Records and subsequently released their first studio album, 1000 Yard Stare, in the US in August 1999. In 2001, doubleDrive began recording a second album with producer John Kurzweg. However, the band parted with MCA Records and the completed album remained unreleased. After shopping the album, the band signed with Roadrunner Records and re-entered the studio in 2002 with producer Michael Barbiero (Guns and Roses, Kiss, Clutch, Gov't Mule, etc...) to remix the album and record new songs. Blue in the Face was released in the US, Australia, and Japan, April 2003. DoubleDrive toured with bands such as Sevendust, Kid Rock, Queensrÿche, Megadeth, Tesla, Seether, Godsmack, Our Lady Peace, Nickelback, Three Doors Down, Drain STH, Virgos, Powerman 5000, Stereomud, etc....

On December 3, 2003, doubleDrive played their final show in Atlanta. Singer Donnie Hamby is now doing DVD work (assisted with Sevendust's Southside Doublewide Acoustic Live and Next DVDs, numerous Roadrunner artists, etc.); guitarist Troy McLawhorn now plays with Dark New Day and Seether ; drummer Mike Froedge now owns his own studio in Atlanta, GA called Open Sky Studio, producing, engineering, and/or playing with local, regional, and national recording artists. He also performs with Open Sky Separators, Dixie Inc., as well as forming a new band called Speed X with doubleDrive bassist Josh Sattler, Mike Stone of Queensrÿche (guitar) and Black Label Society guitarist Nick Catanese. Their debut album will be released sometime in late 2009 or early 2010.
