Biography

One of Hollywood's shoe-ins for deft portrayals of creepy, underhanded, Machiavellian types with an anarchic bite, Doug Hutchison distinguished himself with two career-defining portrayals in the late '80s: he played Obie, a member of a sinister student league at an all-boys' Catholic school, in director Keith Gordon's The Chocolate War (1988), and Sproles, an undercover cop's younger brother who causes problems for an economically divided couple (Andrew McCarthy and Molly Ringwald) in David Anspaugh's romantic drama Fresh Horses (1988). Hutchison frequently rose above the inherent weaknesses of the material he was handed, as in the two said films; one critic observed that Sproles "hoist[ed] [Horses] onto his shoulders for the duration of his scenes."

That ability didn't emerge serendipitously; a classically trained performer who received his formal education at Juilliard, Hutchison later studied drama one-on-one under the tutelage of legendary acting coach Sanford Meisner. Unfortunately, within a few years of his astonishing onscreen debuts in 1988, Hutchison's screen activity somewhat declined, and when he did crop up, the projects were unworthy of him (such as 1992's The Lawnmower Man and 1996's Love Always). By the late '90s, however, Hutchison rebounded, with additional roles in A-listers including The Green Mile (1999), I Am Sam (2002), and The Salton Sea (2002). By the tail end of that decade, Hutchison moved into more sensationalistic material, signing for turns in J.T. Petty's horror western The Burrowers (2008) and Lexi Alexander's comic-book superhero film Punisher: War Zone (2008). ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

Early life

Hutchison was born in Dover, Delaware, the son of Ashley and Richard Hutchison. He spent most of his childhood in Detroit, Michigan and Minneapolis, Minnesota. He has a younger brother named Erik. Years later, he moved to New York City, where he attended the Juilliard School. There, he studied with actor Sandy Meisner for two years. As is the case with many aspiring actors, Hutchison was forced to make ends meet through odd-jobs, including dressing as a Citibank card while handing out fliers in Times Square.

Career

Hutchison began acting in high school productions at Apple Valley High School in Minnesota. Shortly after graduating from high school, at the age of 18, he starred in a Minneapolis production of Equus, to highly positive reviews. His other early stage credits include Sing Me Through an Open Window and Shakespeare's Julius Caesar.

Television work

Hutchison has made several guest apperarences on notable shows, such as The Young Riders, Eugene Victor Tooms in The X-Files, a recurring role as the silicate, Elroy-El in Space: Above and Beyond, as an unnamed individual on another Chris Carter show, Millennium, Horace Goodspeed in Lost, Sebastian Hulce on the soap opera The Guiding Light, as serial killer Humphrey Becker in Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, and the TV series Kidnapped, alongside Delroy Lindo. He will guest star as Davros, a European terrorist in 24.[2]

Feature films

Hutchinson entered the film business at the end of the 1980s, portraying Sproles in the 1988 drama film Fresh Horses. That same year, he played Obie Jameson in the film adaptation (1988) of the The Chocolate War. He had more success in the 1990s, appearing in films, such as The Lawnmover Man (1992), racist James Louis 'Pete' Willard in A Time to Kill (1996), Con Air (1997), and Batman & Robin (1997). In 1999, Hutchison was cast as troublemaking prison guard Percy Wetmore in the film adaptation of Stephen King's The Green Mile, which he received critical acclaim for.[3] He continued his career by having supporting roles in the 2000 films Shaft and Bait, I Am Sam (2001), and 2002 films The Salton Sea and No Good Deed. Hutchison's career decreased in the 2000s, when he instead began receiving short films and direct-to-video films. However, he was cast as the brother of Billy Russeti, James Russoti in Punisher: War Zone, the sequel to the first film, based on the antihero The Punisher. He again starred alongside Thomas Jane and Ving Rhames in Give 'em Hell, Malone, scheduled to be released in 2009.

Currently, he is producing Vampire Killers, a show centering around the hunt for a Queen Vampire and her 13 coven members by an elite group of vampire hunters.
