Gamble, Dr John (?1770-1831), army surgeon and author. Born in Strabane, Co. Tyrone, he served in the army in Holland but returned to Ulster with an eye infection, and took to touring Ireland collecting historical traditions. Using this material he wrote novels such as Sarsfield (1814), Howard (1815), Northern Irish Tales (1818), and Charlton (1827), set in the 17th and 18th cents.
