Biography

The all-female hard rock/heavy metal band Drain S.T.H. was formed in 1993 in Stockholm, Sweden (hence the S.T.H., added to avoid confusion with a similarly named American band), and featured singer Maria Sjöholm, guitarist Flavia Canel, bassist Anna Kjellberg, and drummer/vocalist Martina Axén. Displaying an unabashed worship of Alice in Chains, their independent 1996 debut, Horror Wrestling, was dominated by uncompromising grinds of slow, down-tuned guitars, which were then topped with Sjöholm and Axén's beautifully chilling vocal harmonies. Coupled with the band's impressive live performances and supermodel looks, this soon drew the attention of Mercury Records subsidiary The Enclave, which repackaged and re-released the album worldwide two years later with an additional three tracks (including a quarter-speed remake of Motörhead's "Ace of Spades"). The far more accessible follow-up, 1999's Freaks of Nature, managed to shed much of the band's excessive Alice in Chains influences of old and flirted with traces of programmed percussion and even rap, thereby forging a more distinctive sonic identity. But despite extensive touring both in Europe and America (including a lengthy jaunt with that year's Ozzfest) and attaining decent radio airplay in support, Drain S.T.H. never managed to break out of the metal underground, perhaps because they were simply too drop-dead gorgeous to be taken seriously by the notoriously chauvinistic metal masses. A major restructuring at Mercury Records later that year spelled the final disaster for Drain S.T.H., who were dropped in early 2000 and subsequently decided to call it a day. Following the group's breakup, singer Sjöholm became Mrs. Tony Iommi, amazingly enough, while the remaining three members continued to work together under the new name Superfix (though guitarist Canel remains a "silent partner" due to contractual issues). ~ Ed Rivadavia, All Music Guide

Biography

Noted today for their Seattle/Grunge sound, Stockholm all female quartet Drain STH have undergone many direction changes in both musical style and image. Guitarist Flavia Canel and drummer Martina Axén have been together in many acts starting with punk band Livin' Sacrifice (not to be confused with the thrash metal band Living Sacrifice). As this act progressed the sound developed into more of a Hard rock vein.

As the band then veered into more of a mainstream Pop direction Axén, Canel and vocalist Malin Ekholm quit, forming a new band in the form of Rag Doll with bassist Anna Kjellberg, although Rag Doll folded upon Ekholm's departure.

However, interest in the band ignited once more prompting Axen, Canel and Kjellberg to reunite together with ex-Necronancy guitarist Maria Sjöholm. Upon signing a deal with MVG Records the band opted for another new title in Drain. For the American market the band was known as DRAIN S.T.H. Live promotion in North America included a second stage appearance at the Ozzfest event. The 1999 album Freaks Of Nature would be noted for the inclusion of the track Black, co-written and featuring lead guitar from Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi.

Despite heavy publicity, the band would ultimately fold with Axén and Kjellberg (the latter now switching to guitar) created Superfix in union with China from Sinisstar. Progress with this new unit was slow, a second demo and Los Angeles showcase gig being delivered in August 2002.

During 2001 Flavia Canel re-emerged touting her new project, the Brooklyn, New York based Anotherday. In early 2002 Axén would also announce the formation of a high profile side endeavour dubbed Dr. Fungus. Joining her on this venture would be Coal Chamber bassist Nadja Puelen, Adema drummer Kris Kohls and Unida guitarist Arthur Seay.

By mid 2003 Flavia Canel, working alongside vocalist / guitarist Niklas Fagerström, ex-SELPH guitarist Serban Carapancea and drummer Tony Baioni, was touting a fresh Stockholm based band entitled Blowsight. That summer ex-Drain bassist Anna Kjellberg was to be found performing a live stand in role for New York industrial band Hanzel Und Gretyl's 'Fukken Über' US tour. June 2004 had reports emerging that Axén had joined Snake River Conspiracy to replace the exiting Tobey Torres, but in early 2006 it was announced that Axén had quit SRC to focus on her solo work. Kjellberg subsequently embarked on a summer tour with Revolting Cocks.
