drive theory

Theory of learning that predicts a linear relationship between drive (arousal) and learning. According to the theory, as an athlete's arousal or state anxiety increases, so too does his or her performance. Few sport psychologists support drive theory because they recognize that overarousal can diminish the quality of performance. See also inverted-U hypothesis.
