Biography

Dropping Daylight are very much part of the post-emo era of American indie rock, with songs that favor anthemic choruses and jagged, distorted guitar parts. However, at the same time, the young Minneapolis quartet are in some ways a throwback to a time about decade prior to their early-2000s birth: leader Sebastian Davin's clever lyrics, rhythmic piano lines, and smooth '70s AM radio pop vocal style strongly recall one-time alternative rock favorites like Ben Folds Five, the Eels, the New Radicals and Fastball. Formed in Minneapolis in 2001 with the truly rotten and achingly pretentious name "Sui Generis," Sebastian, his brother, guitarist Seth Davin, bassist Rob Burke, and drummer Jake Englund quickly changed their name to the even worse "Sue Generis," and released an album under that name, Back to Nowhere, in the fall of 2003. Regular touring and a buzz-enhancing performance at the 2004 South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin led the quartet to sign with the Sony/BMG indie rock imprint Octone Records. After changing their name to the still not great but much less awful Dropping Daylight, the band did the Vans Warped Tour and opened for a number of rising pop-punk and emo acts. Their first EP under the new name, Take a Photograph, was released in the summer of 2005, after which Englund left the band, replaced by Allen Maier. Dropping Daylight's full-length debut, Brace Yourself, was released in the spring of 2006. ~ Stewart Mason, All Music Guide

History

Dropping Daylight began when the original members (Sebastian Davin, along with Rob Burke and now former drummer Jake Englund) were in junior high under the name "Associated Mess". Around 2000 at the Berkley school of music Sebastian Davin and former drummer Jake Englund recorded a short disc for school project purposes. Liking the sound of it they called former Associated Mess member and current bassist Rob Burke who was looking through a dictionary and found the band name "Sui Generis" which was later found to be a Latin band signed to Sony Records. The spelling was changed to Sue Generis and vocalist and keyboardist Sebastian Davin recruited his younger brother, Seth Davin to practice with them and was later permanently named their guitarist. The name for legal reasons was Later changed to Dropping Daylight when they were signed by Octone Records in 2005.[1]

The band toured on the Vans Warped Tour for a number of years, but more recently have toured with such acts as Breaking Benjamin, Blue October, Monty Are I,Meg & Dia and Jason Mraz. They have been featured on MTV News: You Hear it First.[1] Their track "Tell Me" off their first full-length album, Brace Yourself, has been receiving regular radio-play from a number of stations.

They tour regularly with Breaking Benjamin, and Sebastian contributed vocals and piano to Breaking Benjamin's Phobia album.

Sebastian contributed piano to Paramore's Riot album.

Brace Yourself is the band's first nationally released album. However it could be considered their third album. Previously demos and releases under various band names were self-titled "Associated Mess", self-titled "Sue Generis", and "Back to Nowhere." Singles and EPs include "Take a Photograph" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." Many songs are reinterpretations of earlier songs all the way back to their original demo. The band has also spread the word of a possible live release from their concert at Wilkes-Barre's Wachovia Arena and Kingston's Joe Nardone's Gallery of Sound.[2]

This band has changed their name to "Kidnap Kings"
