Duffryn (Welsh: Dyffryn) is a large council housing housing estate [1] in the southwest of the city of Newport, South Wales comprising a large portion of the Tredegar Park electoral district (ward). Built on land belonging to Tredegar House [2], it was completed in 1978 and at the time won several awards for its design. The layout of the estate, as viewed from above, is that of large terraces undulating around a central wooded area.
Despite the relative recent development of the estate, the name Duffryn is an ancient name for the area. Duffryn is an anglicised version of the Welsh Dyffryn (meaning large U-shaped valley).
Duffryn is home to two of Newport's largest secondary schools — Duffryn High School [3] and St. Joseph's RC High School. In 2006, Duffryn High School was the filming location of the Doctor Who episode School Reunion, filmed in late-summer 2005.
The residents of the council-built housing estate at Duffryn were subject to national and international ridicule in 2001 when a national newspaper (the News of the World) ran a campaign to allow parents access to information about paedophiles (child abusers) living in their area. Residents of Duffryn confused the term 'paedophile' with 'paediatrician' (medical professionals who specialise in the care of children). This resulted in a respected paediatrician (Yvette Cloete) living in a house neighbouring the Duffyn estate having her house daubed with graffiti saying 'Paedo' causing her to have to leave. When asked about the incident and having the difference explained slowly and clearly to her a Duffryn resident stated "I heard that the doctor's house had got attacked, but it's because people don't want no paedophiles here", whilst another also did not seem to be able to understand what had happened and stated "It's bad that someone innocent's house has been attacked, but that will happen if they're not all locked up'.[1]
