Dunvegan

[Scottish Gaelic Dùn Bheagan, Bheagain]

Castle, village, and bay in the north-west Isle of Skye. While most of the present-day castle was constructed from the 15th to 19th centuries, its foundations date from the 9th. It has been occupied continuously-longer than any castle in Britain-by the same family, the MacLeods. The castle museum holds the famous ‘fairy flag’, thought to have been captured by the Saracens. The castle and environs have long been the focus of a considerable body of folklore.

Dunvegan (Gaelic: Dùn Bheagain) is a town on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. It is famous for Dunvegan Castle, seat of the chief of Clan MacLeod. It is also the hometown of celtic fusion band Peatbog Faeries.

The name Dunvegan is Scottish Gaelic for "small castle".

The town has been evolving and expanding a lot in the past 5 years, with several new shops opening in that period.

The town is now home to 4 decent sized hotels/B&B's, a bakery, a restaurant, a cobblers, two general stores, 2 fuelling stations, tourist information, a gun shop, a fishing store, a cake shop and a fruit and vegetable 'shack'. It also has a recycling point and other small facilities.

Dunvegan sits on the shores of the large 'Loch Dunvegan' and the School House restaurant in the town is widely known for its freshly caught fish from the loch itself.

Dunvegan's permanent population is declining, however numbers staying in the area during holidays has increased dramatically over the years since 2001.
