Biography

As a member of proto-industrial legends Skinny Puppy, Dwayne Rudolph Goettel (born February 1, 1964) was instrumental in steering the band's output away from its dance music roots and closer toward a more industrial and unique sound. Having replaced Wilhelm Schroeder (aka Bill Leeb) in 1986, Goettel was recruited for his knowledge of samplers and synthesizers, something that would become an integral part of Skinny Puppy's music.

Although Goettel's first album with the band, 1986's Mind: The Perpetual Intercourse, was neither a critical or commercial success, by 1988, Skinny Puppy was being recognized as the originator of a new musical style, comprising one part Kraftwerk and one part Bauhaus. As their fame grew, the band's lifestyle started to change too. Partnerships with Ministry's Al Jourgensen and Paul Barker led to an increasing incidence of heroin abuse, particularly on the part of Goettel, placing a great strain on relationships within the band.

By 1990's Too Dark Park -- arguably Skinny Puppy's finest effort -- the band had split into two camps, with Goettel and cEVIN Key on one side and Nivek Ogre on the other. Although still technically a functioning band, by 1992, it had become obvious that a working relationship was unlikely. Goettel immersed himself in his new project, Download, to be joined later on by Key.

Sessions for The Process demonstrated just how far apart the trio had drifted, and the resulting album proved to be Skinny Puppy's last. Meanwhile, Goettel completed work on the first Download album, entitled Furnace. Sadly, escalating heroin abuse took it's toll before the album could be released, and Goettel was found dead at his parents' home, on August 23, 1995. ~ Jim Harper, All Music Guide

Dwayne Rudolph Goettel (February 1, 1964 - August 23, 1995) was a member of the industrial band Skinny Puppy. He played keyboards for an early incarnation of the Canadian gothic/synthpop band Psyche, as well as a band called Water, who opened for Skinny Puppy in 1985. He joined Skinny Puppy sometime during the recording of Mind: The Perpetual Intercourse (mid-1986) when he was recruited to take Wilhelm Schroeder's place. Goettel would come to be cEvin Key's primary partner in forming Skinny Puppy's music until the album The Process, as well as in their side projects Doubting Thomas, Cyberaktif, The Tear Garden and Hilt.

Goettel formed Subconscious Records in 1993 to release a 12" single (split with friend Phil Western) under the pseudonym Duck. During the following year, the frustrations of recording The Process led to the formation of Download with Key, Western and Mark Spybey during improvisations during late-night jam sessions.

Goettel died of an apparent heroin overdose in a bathroom at his parents' home in Edmonton, Alberta on August 23, 1995. As a bandmate told Rolling Stone Magazine, Goettel had just returned to his parents' house to kick his habit. Download's first album Furnace and Skinny Puppy's album The Process were both released dedicated to his memory.

While in the band Psyche, he was recruited by guitar player Maury Duchamp to join a band called Voice that was formed with the remnants of the band Office, singer Malcolm Swann and bass player Jeff Sawatzky with the addition of drummer Sherri Leigh Iwaschuk, formerly with the Reverb Angels. Voice recorded a 4 song E.P. for Switch records in 1985 called 'anno di Voce' and performed on a battle of the bands TV show that aired on CBC. Voice survived for a few years in the mid-eighties and gained significant popularity in Alberta. Water was a side project during the Voice years that Dwayne formed with a singer, Mandy Cousins.

aDuck

aDuck is a solo project of Dwayne Rudolph Goettel. According to the Paradigm Shift insert, aDuck was inspired by "the early release of Aphex Twin and other artists in the now exploding European/UK electronic scene". In 1993, Dwayne and Phil Western created Subconscious Records in order to release the Duck/Philth Split 12". There were only 200 copies of this vinyl made. On one side of the vinyl “This Side”, the Philth song “My Heart Is Being Touched By Christ” appears and has the vinyl etching “SUB AQUA”. On the other side of the vinyl “That Side” the Duck song “Power” appears and has the vinyl etching “HOW GOD YOU MAKE THAT LIKE SO GOOD”.

Three aDuck songs have been released, one of which appears renamed and in a different form:

1. Power (from Duck/Philth Split 12", later appears on Paradigm Shift)

2. Phenethylamine Backwash (from Coordinate 01 Compilation, this song later appears remixed as 'Quackerz [Revision]' on Wild Planet)

3. Burnout (from Paradigm Shift)

  • It should be noted that Field is not an aDuck song.
