Earful Tower

Wikipedia: Earful Tower

The Earful Tower is an icon used in Disney theme parks. The tower is based on water towers commonly found on Hollywood studio backlots of the first half of the 1900s, originally a safety measure to douse any fires on the film sets. It includes special lighting on the outline of the Mickey Mouse ears at night.

The Earful Tower was the original icon of Disney's Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. It was built in 1988 by Caldwell Tanks of Louisville, Kentucky. In 2001, Disney erected The Sorcerer's Hat in front of The Great Movie Ride and has used it to represent the park ever since.

In past years, a giant Santa Claus hat was placed over the tower during the Christmas season, a tradition that has been discontinued. During the Fourth of July in 2001, the tower's Mickey Mouse ears were decorated with the American flag. A television commercial made for the park's Star Wars Weekends festival featured an X-Wing flying out of the tower.

During the early years of the Studio, on the Backstage Tour, the Guides would point out that the hat size for the Earful Tower was 342-3/8.
