American and English family of painters. (1) Ralph Earl and his brother James Earl (1761-96) were born in America, but both fled to England in 1778. Ralph Earl returned to New York in 1785. He established the Connecticut style of portraiture and produced some notable landscape works; his son, (2) Ralph E. W. Earl, continued to paint portraits in the same manner as his father. James Earl's son, (3) Augustus Earle, was born in England, but travelled extensively and is best known as a travel artist.
