Biography

Ohio heavy metal duo Early Man revel in the raw energy of truly stripped-down hard rock. Raised Pentecostal in the college town of Columbus, the two friends may have discovered the works of Motörhead, Judas Priest, and Mercyful Fate far later than most -- they were 19 at the time -- but the effect was instantaneous. Guitarist/vocalist Mike Conte and drummer Adam Bennati found their collective muse in New York City, recording a self-titled EP and touring the country with genre-bending Georgia quintet Mastodon in 2004. Their full-length debut, Closing In, was released the following year on Matador. ~ James Christopher Monger, All Music Guide

Early Man is a three-piece heavy metal band from Columbus, Ohio, but now based in Brooklyn, New York. Mike Conte is the guitarist, bassist and vocalist. Adam Bennati plays the drums. The story is that Conte and Bennati were shielded from the world by their Pentecostalist parents until age 19, when they discovered rock music. Drawing heavily from bands such as Black Sabbath, Mercyful Fate, Judas Priest, Kreator, Celtic Frost, and early Metallica, their traditional approach quickly gained the attention of the independent music scene and they were signed by Monitor Records, who released their first EP in early 2005. Larger label, Matador, quickly signed them to a better deal and agreed to release their debut LP, Closing In, in the fall of the same year. A 2nd guitarist, Pete Macy, was added to the band's lineup in 2005. Although they never had an official bassist, they have been known to tour with one, currently Tim Ramage.

The band has recently cut ties with Matador, known for their lighter acts such as Cat Power, and have signed with the metal/experimental label The End Records. They released "Beware The Circling Fin", a 4-song EP on October 14, 2008, which was mixed by Jack Endino.[1] A follow up to their debut full length "Closing In" is entitled "Death Potion", and is said to be released in January or February 2010.
