Plot

Laurel and Hardy are poor and unemployed until a letter arrives informing Hardy that he has inherited a fortune. Hardy moves to a large mansion, and Laurel becomes his butler. One night, Hardy comes home drunk and plays some practical jokes on Laurel. When Laurel has had enough ribbing, he chases Hardy around the house, smashing expensive art and furniture on the way. Fans of Laurel and Hardy are deeply divided over this film. Since the team does not play their normal characters, and Hardy treats Stan terribly, many fans dislike this movie, but if you overlook that fact, this is still a very funny film. Director Emmet Flynn had worked in silent films a long time but did not get along well with Laurel and Hardy and the Hal Roach team. This would be his only film with the team. ~ Bruce Calvert, All Movie Guide

Review

1928 was a transitional year for comic duo Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. While producer Hal Roach had definitely decided he had a winning team on his hands, the pair's personalities had not yet been set in stone. Hence the boys would be seen in their classic personas in a film such as You're Darn Tootin', then a few films later they would seem to take a step backwards in Early to Bed. While it doesn't have the best reputation amongst Laurel and Hardy fans, Early to Bed has quite a few funny moments, and the boys do begin the film as their familiar selves. It's only after Hardy becomes wealthy and hires Laurel as his butler do things seem to fall apart. Hardy's drunken, self-centered playfulness bears little relation (except for the child-like sensibility) to the Oliver Hardy we know and love. Laurel, too, seems off, although he's loaded with great comic business -- he's just a little too intelligent. One of the best jokes actually comes from Should Men Walk Home?, a film Mabel Normand made for Roach -- Hardy has a vanity water fountain with likenesses of his head squirting water. Laurel is constantly whacking the heads to get them to work properly, and you know that by the end of the film one of those heads he's whacking is going to be Hardy's real noggin. Early to Bed would probably come off as a much funnier film if it could be seen without the expectations that come along with the names Laurel and Hardy. ~ Janiss Garza, All Movie Guide

Plot

The opening scene shows Stan, Ollie and their dog Buster sitting on a bench in the park opening a letter and throwing the envelope in the bin. Ollie reads the letter and has an immediate smile on his face saying "I'm rich! My uncle left me an enormous fortune" Stan becomes sad asking "What's to become of me?" And Ollie replies "You can be my butler". Stan agrees happily and smiles again. The next scene shows Stan tasting Ollie's birthday cake (Which he enjoys very much) and then fills up Buster's bowl with water from the fountain after putting him in his little bed. After a while Ollie comes home and rings the doorbell, he then hides behind the plants. When Stan comes out Ollie runs into the house and locks Stan out. Ollie plays around with the locked out Stan ruffling his hair and knocking on his head. Stan finally gets back inside when he sees Ollie dancing for the pretty Chinese girl he met in the bar. Stan tells him to be quiet because he'll wake up Buster which gives Ollie the idea of doing so by calling Buster, who jumps at him making Ollie fall back. Stan then asks if Ollie is drunk. Ollie smiles and nods. Stan looks appalled and tells Ollie to go to bed. After putting Buster back to bed, Stan goes upstairs to find Ollie combing his hair saying "I don't want to go to bed, I want to party!" Stan chases Ollie through the bedroom and both of them start wrestling. Stan is fed up and says that he wants to go to bed, which he does. After he falls asleep, Ollie comes in and asks him what he thinks about his "Spring Suit". Stan waves him off and continues to sleep. Ollie then gets the water jar which lies on Stan's bedside table and pours it on Stan's nightclothes and bed. Ollie laughes his head off and Stan claims that he will quit in the morning. The next scene shows Stan entering Ollie's room to give him the bill. Ollie crumples it up and says "You can't quit, I won't let you" and Stan starts throwing vases on the floor and breaking the windows. He then chases after Ollie who hides in the fountain pretending to be one of the spitters. But after a while he comes out again telling Stan to forget the past and to be pals again. Stan agrees and shakes his hand. Ollie then ruffles his hair again and Stan does the same to him. They both laugh and Ollie pushes Stan into the fountain.
