East Jutland metropolitan area (Danish: Byregion Østjylland) is a geographic term for an area in Jutland, Denmark.

The term denotes a functional coherent urban area linked by both infrastructure and labour across municipal boundaries. With more than 1.2 million people living in the area it represents approximately 23% of the population of Denmark and is the second largest coherent urban area after the Copenhagen metropolitan area^[1].

The area is sufficiently small to be flexible. However, at the same time it has the critical mass to achieve international visibility in Aarhus as the driving force. Aarhus has been described as a city with weak signs of status as a World city,^[2] in line with cities like Antwerp, Dresden, Glasgow, Marseille, Saint Petersburg and Turin.

The area consists of 17 municipalities (see below) which have been invited by the national government to find common ground for cooperation.

East Jutland is by far the area in Denmark with the fastest growing population, about 10,000 per year.

1 January 2007-08 population increased by 10,428.

1 January 2008-09 population increased by 11,082.

The East Jutland metropolitan covers a comparatively large area of 9,997 km², slightly larger than the Greater Oslo Region (8.900 km²), but small compared to some other metropolitan areas such as the Hamburg Metropolitan Region (19,000 km²), the Greater Los Angeles Area (87,940 km²) and the Phoenix metropolitan area (37,744 km²). Oklahoma City Metropolitan area (16,500 km²), and a population of 1,2 mio.

Transport

Airports

There are two primary commercial international airports serving the area:

• Aarhus Airport (in the north)
• Billund Airport (in the south)

Motorway

The area has several motorways but the European route E45 is the motorway that goes from the south to the north and is more or less responsible for the growth in the area; it is along this motorway that the East Jutland metropolitan area is growing.

Sports

Football is the most popular spectator sport in Denmark and East Jutland metropolitan area has 5 teams contesting the Danish football championship in the Danish Superliga (there are 12 clubs in the league in all):

• SønderjyskE

Handball is one of the most popular sports in Denmark with 5 out of 12 of the women's best league teams coming from the East Jutland metropolitan area:

And 4 of 14 in the mens best league:

• KIF Kolding
• Bjerringbro-Silkeborg
• Aarhus Gymnastikforening
• Fredericia HK

East Jutland Metropolitan Area is also home to the current national champions in Icehockey SønderjyskE.

Also the area is home of one of the most famous Speedway stadiums in Vojens. It was home to Speedway Grand Prix of Denmark until 2002 where Parken took over.
