Review

Opening with the spume and spray of the nearly 23-minute "Ocean Beach," Gordon Hempton's incredible Ebb and Flow takes us to the top of a breezy sand dune, down amidst the rocks and crevices of a tide pool, into a "Rocky Cove," and finally to the crooked rock fingers of a sandspit. Hempton is renowned for his dedication to pure sound, refusing to doctor his nature recordings with post-production trickery. The result is a collection of pristine recordings that capture the water's relationship to its surrounding elements in each of the environments represented. "Tide Pool" reduces the universe to the contours of a submerged pebble. Meanwhile, "Sandspit" and "Ocean Beach" let the tide do the talking. Hempton's microphones capture the tide's ability to reduce one to insignificance, while at the same time illustrating how big and full of potential the world really is. Ebb and Flow is inspiring and relaxing; best of all, it's recorded without a trace of distortion, ensuring that its effect is never watered down by faulty technology. ~ Johnny Loftus, All Music Guide
