A genus of the Boraginaceae family of plants; contains a series of hepatotoxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids and continued ingestion of the plants causes chronic liver damage. The plant also contributes to the development of toxemic jaundice, the end-stage of chronic copper poisoning in sheep. Includes E. plantagineum (E. lycopsis), E. sericeum, E. vulgare. Called also Paterson's curse, Salvation Jane, Viper's buglos, Lady Campbell weed.

Ek'i-um. A genus of over 35 species of Eurasian herbs or shrubby plants, a few grown for ornament.

Description
Rough foliage, with alternate, simple leaves. Flowers showy, blue, in forked or unforked, 1-sided spikes. Corolla funnel- or trumpet-shaped, its limb somewhat oblique. Stamens 5, nearly always protruding.

How to Grow
Sow seeds of this cool-weather wildflower in dry, sandy soil (pH 6.5-7.0) in fall where winters are mild, in early spring elsewhere. Or start indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost. No need to thin.

Echium auberianum

Echium (pronounced /ˈɛkiəm/)[1] is a genus of 60 species of flowering plant in the family Boraginaceae. The type species is Echium vulgare, viper's bugloss. Species of Echium are native to North Africa, Southern Africa, Europe, Madeira and the Canary Islands, as well as parts of East Asia. One species, Echium plantagineum (Patterson's Curse), is a major invasive species in Australia. Many species are used as ornamental and garden plants and may be found in suitable climates throughout the world.

Echium species are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including Coleophora onosmella and Orange Swift.
