Advocacy for, or work towards, protecting the natural environment from degradation or pollution. The 1960s saw the start of a growing concern with ‘green issues’, and movements against industrialization and technological advance. The essential motivation ranged from the pragmatic desire to make the world safer to an intrinsic valuing of ‘nature’, of which humans are seen as a part, rather than owners.
