Edgar Dale

Quotes By: Edgar Dale

Quotes:

"One of the curious things about censorship is that no one seems to want it for himself. We want censorship to protect someone else; the young, the unstable, the suggestible, the stupid. I have never heard of anyone who wanted a film banned because otherwise he might see it and be harmed."

Edgar Dale (April 27, 1900 – March 8, 1985) was a U.S. educationist who developed the famous Cone of Experience. He made several contributions to audio and visual instruction, including a methodology for analyzing the content of motion pictures.

Dale was a professor of educations at Ohio State University.

In 1933 Dale wrote a paper on how to effectively create a High School film appreciation class. This paper has been noted for having a very different view of adolescent interaction with films than that taken by the Film COntrol Boards of the time.[1]

Dale's Cone Misrepresented with Numbers

Edgar Dale's Cone of Experience is often misrepresented by those who add numbers to the cone. Hundreds, if not thousands, of misrepresentations have been created. In fact, this very entry had two such misrepresentations on 11-11-2007 when they were erased. See the following webpage for (1) some of the most common misrepresentations, (2) an image of Dale's original cone, and (3) citations.
