(Eduard Hubert) Cuypers (Gerard Hendri

Art Encyclopedia: (Eduard Hubert) Cuypers (Gerard Hendri

(b Roermond, 18 April 1859; d The Hague, 1 June 1927). Nephew of (1) P. J. H. Cuypers. He trained in his uncle's office before establishing an independent practice in Amsterdam in 1878. He had proportionally more secular and private commissions than his uncle and his cousin Joseph. Eduard Cuypers was particularly interested in domestic architecture; in 1903 he established Het Huis, his own periodical devoted to the subject, which illustrated exclusively the residences and interior decoration emanating from the studio of the same name that he opened in 1900. From 1905 to 1927 the magazine, renamed Het Huis oud en nieuw, included articles on historical buildings and furnishings and the architecture of the Dutch Indies. The contents kept pace with his increasingly eclectic preferences. At the turn of the century Eduard Cuypers worked in Nieuwe Kunst, Dutch Art Nouveau, and was influenced by the work of Joseph Maria Olbrich in his studio and house at Jan Luykenstraat 2 (1899), in the house at van Eeghenstraat 22 and in the headquarters (1902) for the Algemene Handelsblad newspaper, all in Amsterdam. Next he began to emulate 16th- and 17th-century styles, as in his competition project for the Vredespaleis (1906) in The Hague and the country house Die Hooge Vuursche (1910) at Baarn. Nevertheless, the office of this increasingly historicist architect was a training ground for half a dozen future members of the Amsterdam school, and in his role as mentor, as in his interest in the Gesamtkunstwerk, Cuypers carried on his uncle's legacy.
