( b Copenhagen, 13 April 1830; d Weimar, 15 Jan 1904). Belgian composer of Danish origin. He studied at the Brussels Conservatory, winning the Belgian Prix de Rome (1851). He succeeded Liszt as court music director at Weimar (1858), writing operas, notably Le roi Edgard (1855), incidental music and songs.
