(b Matanzas, Cuba, 31 Oct 1949). American conductor and composer. She studied with Patterson at the RAM and later settled in London. In 1976 she founded Lontano and is their music director; she also directs the European Women's Orchestra and the London Chamber Symphony and has toured throughout the world. She formed a record company, Lorelt, in 1992, which concentrates on areas neglected by other companies, notably women composers. Her compositional style is eclectic: her first opera Sister Aimee (1973-83) uses a variety of styles and techniques, including gospel music and aleatory procedures.
