MacLysaght, Edward (1887-1986) (formerly Lysaght), historian and genealogist. Born on board ship to Australia, he was educated at Oxford and UCC. He was by turns farmer, publisher and director of Maunsel & Co., prisoner during the Anglo-Irish War, Free State Senator, and Chief Genealogical Officer in the National Library of Ireland, 1943-55. Irish Life in the Seventeenth Century (1939) is a well-researched social history. Irish Families: Their Names, Arms and Origins (4 vols., 1957-65) is a pioneering work of modern genealogy. His novel The Gael (1919) is a critique of Irish society. He wrote several books in Irish, including the novel Cúrsaí Thomáis (1927).
