Biography

Efterklang's post-rock experiments were first heard in December 2000, when childhood friends Casper Clausen (vocals), Mads Brauer (computer), and Rasmus Stolberg (guitar) -- all three having recently located to Copenhagen from the tiny Danish island of Als -- joined musical forces with pianist Rune Mølgaard (piano) and drummer/trumpeter Thomas Husmer. From the start, the bandmembers took a D.I.Y. approach to their music, handling all aspects of songwriting, recording, and production in their Copenhagen practice space. The self-released Springer EP was issued in 2003 on the band's own Rumraket label, with 500 copies packaged in fake fur. That same year, video artist Karim Ghahwagi joined the ensemble and began pairing Efterklang's music with integrated video collages. Now attracting attention from record labels, the band signed with the Yorkshire-based Leaf Label and issued Tripper in 2004; the orchestral album soon became the fastest-selling debut in The Leaf Label's history. Efterklang's popularity soared in Denmark, with "Under Giant Trees" debuting at number one on the country's singles chart. Several smaller releases followed -- the reissued version of Springer, One-Sided LP on Philadelphia's Burnt Toast Vinyl, the five-song Under Giant Trees -- and Efterklang released their third full-length, Parades, in October 2007. The group toured extensively for the next two years, and the hard work ethic paid off with an invitation to join the roster of 4AD in September of 2009, alongside the National, TV on the Radio, and Deerhunter. Even so, the band remained loyal to its first indie label, and the following month, The Leaf Label released Performing Parades, a live CD and DVD of Efterklang performing Parades in its entirety with the Danish National Chamber Orchestra in Copenhagen. ~ Andrew Leahey, All Music Guide

Efterklang is the name of a Danish rock group formed in December 2000.

The name 'Efterklang' comes from the Danish word for remembrance or reverberation. Though it consists of four core members, the group regularly includes three or more members for live gigs and plays orchestral and experimental rock music. Formed in Copenhagen, its four core members are: Mads Brauer, Casper Clausen, Thomas Husmer and Rasmus Stolberg. The original lineup also included Rune Mølgaard, but he has taken a more secluded role since 2007. When performing live, the core four-piece band is complemented with the addition of three to four closely-related live band members.

They have released albums on the British/American record label The Leaf Label, but also have their own record label called Rumraket (the Danish word for space rocket). So far the Rumraket roster includes Grizzly Bear, amiina, Cacoy, Erik Levander, Kama Aina, Slaraffenland, Taxi Taxi!, and Canon Blue.

Efterklang has a history of working with many guest musicians on their recordings. They also produced a vast number of artistic music videos by filmmakers like Karim Ghahwagi, Tobias Stretch, Anders Morgenthaler, Carolina Melis, Jeremiah Zagar. Nan Na Hvass from Hvass&Hannibal is the mastermind behind the critically acclaimed artwork for Efterklang's One-Sided LP, Under Giant Trees, Parades, and the Mirador video (Oct. 2007)

Efterklang's second album, Parades, released October 2007, has won several awards and nominations. Recently (April 2009) it was selected as the 38th best album released between April 2005 to April 2009 by Clash Magazine (UK). On a 2008 tour with Slaraffenland, the two groups collaborated on a joint EP under the name Slaraffenklang
