Review
Chris Jeely has had many musical guises over the years, with Skulllike being one of his more straightforward ones, less post-shoegaze and more straightforward rock & roll -- though with a shadowy edge that bespeaks plenty of familiarity with early Factory Records releases, among other things. Eggs on Equators, a short release at six songs, features him in one-man band mode, overdubbing all parts to create the impression of a full band performance and doing so nicely, down to his contrasting harmonies. There's a rough energy to songs like "Eyes" and the title track that suggests everything from early Joy Division to Mogwai at its most focused, but with a yearning twist that is somehow all-American. More easygoing songs like "As/So" are no less enjoyable -- romantic, almost -- but keep a slower pace and a steadier build. "Wide Awake" could even be a Built to Spill song, though one with a notably different singer. The guitar extremities more familiar from his work in Accelera Deck do surface from time to time, though, most notably in the frazzled, extended introduction of "Monarch." It also turns up in the arrangement of "Death Rides a Rainbow," with a squalling additional part behind the core riff to add further unsettled texture. ~ Ned Raggett, All Music GuideTracks
