Eglon

Bible Guide: Eglon

("calf ?")

1. An Amorite city whose king allied himself to the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Lachish and Jarmuth to fight against Joshua. He was defeated and killed (Josh 10:5, 10, 16, 26). Later Joshua took the city and destroyed it (Josh 10:35). It was included in the domain of the tribe of Judah (Josh 15:39) when Joshua divided the land of Canaan among the Children of Israel (Josh 14:1).

Several sites have been suggested but no positive identification has been made.

2. King of Moab. In alliance with Ammon and Amalek, he defeated Israel (Judg 3:12-13), who remained under his yoke for 18 years (Judg 3:14) until Ehud the son of Gera killed him by trickery while bringing tribute (Judg 3:16-22). When he told the king that he had a message from God, Eglon, who was "a very fat man" rose from his chair as a mark of respect, and Ehud "took the dagger from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly".
