Heckart, [Anna] Eileen (1919–2001), actress. A native of Columbus, Ohio, she made her New York debut in 1943 and soon rose to important supporting roles in such plays as Picnic (1953), The Bad Seed (1954), A View from the Bridge (1955), and The Dark at the Top of the Stairs (1957). Heckart achieved stardom in a failed comedy, Everybody Loves Opal (1961), then went on to play a variety of roles in You Know I Can't Hear You When the Water's Running (1967) and the possessive mother Mrs. Baker in Butterflies Are Free (1969). Later she was more active in regional theatre and television but did appear in the New York productions of Ladies at the Alamo (1977), Eleemosynary (1989), The Cemetery Club (1990), Northeast Local (1995), and The Waverly Gallery (2000).

Biography
Over her long career, character actress Eileen Heckart has distinguished herself on stage, television, and in feature films. Tall and thin with sharp angular features, she often plays outspoken, strong-willed, and highly intelligent women. Fans of The Mary Tyler Moore show from the 1970s will remember Heckart for playing Mary's brassy Aunt Flo. Trained at the American Theater Wing following studies at Ohio State University, Heckart was on Broadway in the early '40s and appeared in numerous major productions. For the 1957-1958 theater season, Heckart earned a New York Drama Critics Award for her work in The Dark at the Top of the Stairs. She has won six Tony nominations during her stage career and in the late '90s was inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame. Heckart began her sporadic television career in 1952 and made her feature-film debut with Miracle in the Rain (1956). She earned a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination that year for her work in The Bad Seed (1956); she was also awarded a Golden Globe for the film. In 1972, she won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 1976 for her role in Butterflies Are Free. In 1967, Heckert received an Emmy for Win Me a Place at Forest Lawn. She won her second one in 1994 for a 1993 appearance on the sitcom Love & War. Heckart was born Anna Eileen Heckart[1] in Columbus, Ohio, the daughter of Esther (née Stark) and Leo Herbert. She was legally adopted by her grandfather, J.W. Heckart.[2] Her family was of Irish and German descent.[citation needed] She graduated from Ohio State University with a B.A. in drama.
Heckart was married to John Harrison Yankee Jr. from 1942 until his death in 1997. Her son Luke Yankee is the author of Just Outside the Spotlight: Growing Up with Eileen Heckart (ISBN 0-8230-7888-4), published by Back Stage Books in 2006.
