‘Ein Männlein steht im Walde’, first line of ‘Rätsel’, a poem for children, written in 1827 by Hoffmann von Fallersleben. It is used, together with its folk-tune, by E. Humperdinck in the opera Hänsel und Gretel. The ‘Männlein’ of the riddle is a toadstool.
