Review

On El Buen Pastor, Raphy Leavitt returns to his original, unpolished sound, where Leavitt's great lyrics are the best asset, focusing on faith, phoniness, and wisdom. The title song is among Leavitt's catchiest tunes, and "Te Arrepentiras" and "Viento" received a fair taste of airplay, while Sammy Marrero carves another notch as one of salsa's most original voices. Oddly enough, the band did not have same following with an improved collective sound, so the group's return to its old, feeble one seemed to occur by necessity. This is one of the band's most requested efforts, and Leavitt continued to establish himself as a quite sensitive and talented songwriter; this ability (and Marrero's vocalizing) is what keeps this incredibly popular band going. ~ José A.
