Cartilage with an amorphous, unstructured matrix containing elastic fibres in addition to chondrocytes. Elastic cartilage supports the pinna (outer ear), maintaining its structure, while allowing it to be flexible.

A yellowish flexible cartilage in which the matrix is infiltrated by a network of elastic fibers; it occurs primarily in the external ear, eustachian tube, and some cartilages of the larynx and epiglottis. Also called yellow cartilage.
