Elea (Lat. Velia), Greek colony on the west coast of south Italy founded by Phocaea (in Ionia) c.540 BC, when the whole population left the city at the threat of Persian conquest (the story is told by Herodotus, 1. 164). It is chiefly famed for its school of philosophers (see below).
