Eleanor Roosevelt High School is a public high school located on the Upper East Side of the borough of Manhattan in New York City.

School history, Staff

Eleanor Roosevelt High School was opened in September 2003.[1]The first and current principal is Susan Elliott. She had served as Assistant Principal of Baruch College Campus High School (named after Bernard Baruch). Prior to that, she helped to start Urban Peace Academy, an alternative high school, and worked there as an administrative assistant and math teacher. She began her career as a middle school math teacher.

Structure

Eleanor Roosevelt High School is a five-floor structure with two modern science laboratories, two elevators, a miniature gymnasium, an art studio, a computer laboratory with three different formats (Mac, Windows and Linux) and an impressive music room with four soundproof rooms.


Student body

Eleanor Roosevelt High School is one of the best ranked public high schools in New York City. The high school had its first graduating class in June 2006, with the students going on to such colleges as University of Maryland College Park, Bard College, Barnard College, Emory University, Georgetown University, Boston University, Hunter College, George Washington University, New York University, Smith College, University of Michigan, and University of Pennsylvania.[citation needed]

Achievements


  • ERHS won a NYC Blackboard award for Best New School.
  • ERHS's Science Olympiad group for the "Write It, Do It" Tournament won second place to Townsend Harris in 2006.
  • ERHS's Science Olympiad group for 'Experimental Design Science' won third place in 2006.
  • ERHS took the PSAL (Public School Athletic League) Tennis Division "B" Championship during its second year after entering the public school league in 2006.
  • ERHS's Debate Team won second place in the Lincoln Douglas City-Wide Debates in 2007.
  • ERHS's girls tennis team is a Division "B" Manhattan Champion.
  • ERHS participates in 'Students On Ice-Trip to Antarctica.'
  • ERHS has also been successful in starting a webcasting internet radio program, with senior webcasting hosts Cedric Tam (Big C at Sports Central) and David Lugassy (M. One the real One).

National Honor Society

In March 2007, Jim Watkins of the CW11 spoke at the induction ceremony for the inductees of the National Honor Society. [citation needed]

Graduation

At the recent graduation for the graduating class of 2007, Joel I. Klein spoke.
